Quality education is the foundation of our society and economy. We must place a priority on our public education system to ensure that all children attain the knowledge and skills they need to achieve their potential in our changing world. On the state level we must ensure that our communities have sufficient funding to give our students the tools they need to succeed, from technology to nutritious food to optimal—and safe—learning environments. Every student should feel safe walking into school each morning, and every parent should feel comfortable knowing their children are in a safe environment. We need to ensure that every Massachusetts resident has access to an affordable, high-quality degree program while we work to reduce the burden of student debt that is crippling our graduates.
We need to explore creative solutions to enhancing school security, enabling our schools to make physical improvements to help keep our students safe. We should look at statewide full-day public kindergarten, giving students in every school district an equal opportunity as they begin their education. Massachusetts schools are among the best in the nation. We need to maintain that level of excellence, while striving to achieve more, providing our students and teachers the resources they need for an optimal learning and teaching environment.
As a member and chair of the Westford School Committee, I have worked tirelessly at the local level to serve the needs of our students and teachers, finding solutions and solving problems, from addressing major infrastructure issues to ensuring adequate funding for special education programs. As your Senator, I will fight to ensure that every student has access to a quality education, regardless of where they live and what school they attend.
